Along with patient files, HIPAA requires the proper destruction of x-rays and x-ray film. As with any problem there are multiple solutions.

• Some shredding services will allow you to leave your x-rays in with your files when they come to shred. Others require you to remove them to prevent the contamination of the paper for recycling.
• Many offices have been contacted by recycling companies looking to buy the x-rays to recover the silver. While this is an excellent solution for locations with a large volume it generally does not work when you only have a few boxes to shred.
